Delhi Latest NewsDelhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit scripted history by retaining her post for the third consecutive time.

Continuing its winning streak in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Congress on Monday wrested the Rajendra Nagar seat by defeating BJP candidate Asha Yogi, widow of three-time MLA Puran Chand, by over 5,000 votes.

Shiela Dikshit, who steered the Congress to a historic hat-trick in Delhi, was elected as the leader of Congress Legislature Party, paving way for her ‘third innings’ as Chief Minister in the national capital.

As it became clear that the Congress was going to win the Delhi Assembly elections, visitors and party workers thronged the Chief Minister’s residence on the morning of the results.

The BJP might not have let the Indian National Lok Dal contest the Assembly elections in Delhi due to the NDA and the INLD tie-up in Rajasthan and Haryana, but the latter has managed to find its way into the Delhi Assembly.

A day after their defeat in Delhi, BJP workers are now questioning their choice of candidates. Statistics point to the fact that in several cases, the party handed tickets to candidates who had already lost the electorate’s mandate.

Of 863 candidates in the fray this Assembly elections, 702 did not manage to save their deposits after failing to muster the minimum of one-sixth of the votes polled in their respective constituencies.

From a firebrand youth leader to a seasoned politician to a veteran physician, the new faces in the fourth Assembly of Delhi are a mix of youthful exuberance and experience.

Avtar Singh Hit, Akali candidate from Rajouri Garden, lost by only 46 votes to A Dayanand Chandila of the Congress.

The Shiromani Akali Dal has failed to open its account in Delhi. But the Akali candidates are not disappointed.

Central Delhi saw Congress candidates maintain their winning run in constituencies like Chandni Chowk, Ballimaran and Sadar Bazaar.
