Site Insight -- Physics make the world move
There is an interesting new site on the internet which explains everyday phenomena which we take for granted. Hosted by a physics professor Loius A. Bloomfield, the site at www.phys.virginia.edu answers common questions about physics. The entire site has been categorised according to appliances and functions. From lamps to knives, to surfing. The site has answers about how each activity takes place and explains which rules of physics govern them. A popular question is: what will happened if a hole is drilled through the centre of the earth and a ball is thrown through it. Will it emerge through the surface at the other end? The answer is that if there is no resistance, the ball will emerge at the other end and then fall back due to gravity. And this will go on. If there is resistance, then the ball will eventually settle at the centre of the earth. Copyright © 1997 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
