India's footwear exports, which have maintained a steady growth in recent years with the export value for 1996-97 standing at $343 million, desperately needs the backing of an equally competitive domestic shoe component industry.

Singapore shipyards battle to stay afloat
Singapore's attempt to stay competitive in the ship repair business is an uphill battle. While the industry seems to be moving out of a cyclical doldrums, recovery remains elusive due to a surplus dock capacity and competition from lower-cost yards in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and China.
