Oil sector: it is a matter of time before delicensing

The oil sector recieved its major boost with the discovery of Bombay high in 1974. Though oil was discovered in the country way back in 1866 - only seven years after the discovery of the first oil well in the USA - for almost a century this activity remained confined to the north-east.

The petrochemicals industry has been one of the fastest growing sectors in the past two decades. During this period, the chemical industry has grown faster than the industrial growth rate while the growth of the petrochemical industry has overshot that of the chemical industry.
