Panel set up to review ports act

NEW DELHI, Dec 4: A committee has been set up by the Union government headed by Cochin Port Trust chairman C Babu Rajeev to review the Indian Ports Act The committee is to identify the provisions in the statute which are no longer required due to changes in maritime or port activities over the years.

The idea is to get them in tune with present needs allowing ports to operate in harmony with the new climate of economic liberalisation.

The committee has been asked to submit its report by December 10. The members are -- K A Venkatesan, secretary (retired) Chennai Port Trust; A Chakraborty, managing director, Indian Ports Association; S Venkateswaran, legal expert on Maritime Law, Mumbai; Kailash Nathan, CEO, Gujarat Maritime board; R R Sinha, dy chairman, Mumbai Port Trust; V S Gopinath, dy conservator, Marmugao Port Trust; and one representative each from three Directorate General (shipping) and law ministry.
