Agriculture sector reforms hang fire; fate of Bills uncertain

[Details] The Union agriculture ministry could not make much headway with reforms in the sector as committed in the common minimum programme of the UF government. The announcement of concessions on sale of fertilisers in the current rabi season is long overdue. Also, the Centre has yet to decide on the fate of the Aquaculture Authority Bill.

Foreign banks are more efficient, says Reserve Bank study

[Details] Foreign banks operating in the country have completely outdone their domestic counterparts in overall efficiency, according to a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) study. Not even a single domestic public sector or private bank figures in the top 20 banks in the country on overall efficiency based on profitability, productivity and financial management, says the study on 'Development of composite index in banking efficiency'.

Maharashtra yet to decide fate of loss-making units

[Details] The Maharashtra government is yet to decide on the closure or privatisation of loss-making undertakings in view of strong opposition from workers and the opposition parties. The accumulated loss incurred by 21 of the total 38 state government undertakings has increased to Rs 391.04 crore in 1996-97 from Rs 200.92 crore.
