  Wishes aren't horses
One should not be carried away by CSO's report of a revival in industrial output during November 1997 in its quick estimates of the index of industrial production (IIP). For, this has to be sustained at least till the end of the current fiscal year if any pragmatic assumptions are to be made of the industrial sector being on the recovery path.

Baroda Rayon reportedly is exploring the possibility of entering into a contract for manufacture of polyester yarn for Reliance and selling its viscose yarn unit to Indian Rayon. Baroda Rayon's capacities are too small to be viable.

Finetuning hurts
Fears that the bank rate hike by 200 basis points, together with the liquidity squeeze clamped by the rise in CRR, would send lending interest rates zooming have turned out to be exaggerated. The State Bank, the country's biggest, has raised its prime lending rate by 100 basis points and the medium term lending rate by 75 basis points.

The agreement on Trade-Related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs), including trade in counterfeit goods, is based on the existing multilateral conventions on IPRs protection, most of which are administered and monitored by the UN World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Wooing foreign money

The data bank may contain information about foreign investment inflows, location profiles including availability of man power, electricity and water.
