Crude prices likely to go up soon:

The international crude prices are now beginning to rise in the wake of the US threat to Iraq. While prices for crude had fallen to the lowest levels since April 1994 on January 22 -- Dubai crude touched $12.6 per barrel -- latest reports indicate that prices have recently gone up by around a dollar. Petroleum ministry officials monitoring the Gulf situation feel prices are certain to go up a little more in the days to come, the ministry sources said.

Global travel, tourism fair:

An international travel and tourism exhibition focusing on India as a highly dynamic market with vast tourism potential will be held in New Delhi from April 3. The three day event jointly organised by ITE India Pvt limited and the department of tourism, will provide an interactive platform for Indian travel industry and its overseas counterparts. The mega event is expected to provide new opportunities of joint-ventures, transfer of new technology and export-import tie-upsbetween Indian and overseas travel operators, the managing director of India International Travel and Tourism Exhibition, Mukesh Sharma said.

Workshop on quality, standards:

The Confederation of Indian Industry, National Institute of Standards and Technology, department of science and technology and National Physical Laboratory are organising a workshop on quality, standards, accreditation and related issues in Delhi, which has started from Wednesday. The workshop will be aimed at identifying and resolving some of the non-tariff barriers to trade among the US and India. A high-powered delegation led by Peter Heydemann from the National Institute of Standards and Trade, US department of commerce is visiting India with a team of three experts including in the area of DNA based technologies.

Railways earnings exceed target by 1.69 m tonnes in December:

The Railways moved 314.24 million tonnes of revenue-earning freight during the first nine months of the current financial year endingDecember 1997 as compared to 296.14 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year, representing an increase of 18.10 million tonnes. The target of 312.55 million tonnes for the period was exceeded by 1.69 million tonnes despite depletion in the offer of traffic from iron, steel and cement sectors, says a report from the ministry.

Scientists urged to focus on jute goods consumption pattern:

The deputy director general (crop sciences) of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research Mangala Rai has urged jute scientists to shift their focus from increasing production to the consumption pattern of jute goods. Addressing the former and existing scientists of the Central Research Institute of Jute and Allied Fibres on the golden jubilee celebrations of the institute, Rai said that until and unless the scientists re-orient their work it will not help the Indian economy.
