Padmashree for BARC director

BARC director, Anil Kakodkar, has been awarded Padmashree for his outstanding contributions in the field of nuclear engineering and technology. Kakodkar's current interests include the design of an advanced heavy water reactor based on thorium which will suit the specific Indian conditions of present technology base and resources.

Kakodkar is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Institution of Engineers (India), Maharashtra Academy of Science and Indian Academy of Science.

He is recipient of the Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Award for 1988, H K Firodia Award for Excellence in Science and Technology (1996), Rockwell medal (1977), and MRSI-ICSC Super Conductivity and Materials Science annual prize for 1997.

S Davidson joins Commercial Union in India

Sandy Davidson has been appointed as the representative manager for Commercial Union in India. Davidson takes over from Michael J Adams. Davidson brings with him over 40 years ofexperience in the insurance business including three years in India from 1961 to 1963 before the insurance sector was nationalised in the country. His last assignment was as regional manager, the Saudi United Insurance Company, which is an associate company of Commercial Union.

Commercial Union is a leading international insurer writing all classes of life and general insurance in over 50 countries worldwide. It is one of the largest marine insurers in the world and is one of Europe's leading investment houses. The unrivalled security of the CU group is backed by assets under management of over $111 billion.

In 1995, Commercial Union became the first international insurer to be granted representative office status by the Reserve Bank of India.

Malkani joins Orchid as executive chef

Sanjay Malkani has joined The Orchid as executive chef. A diploma holder from The Oberoi School of Management, he has specialised in kitchen management.

Prior to joining The Orchid, Malkani was with the Oberoigroup for 18 years. He also has overseas experience, having worked in Iraq, Muscat and Nepal.The Orchid is Asia's first certified eco-friendly hotel. It has been certified by HVS Eco Services and is on its way to getting the international five globe rating.

Tefal appoints new chief financial officer

Tefal India, part of Groupe SEB, the world's largest small domestic appliances company has appointed Rajesh Marwaha as chief financial officer. Marwaha was earlier the finance controller at Tefal.

A chartered accountant, Marwaha was earlier with Pepsi Foods Ltd., reporting directly to the company's vice president. He has been part of the core Tefal team entrusted with the task of ensuring a smooth entry of the global giant into the Indian market. Responsible for the entire finance and administration functioning at Tefal, he has been instrumental in the setting up of proper controls and procedures, that confirm to the international standards of Groupe SEB.

Misra appointed director (P&A), Nalco

K N Misra has been appointed as director (personnel & administration) of National Aluminium Company Ltd (Nalco). Prior to this, he was serving as General Manager (HRD) in the same organisation.

Misra is also acting as chairman of the National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM), Utkal chapter.

He joined Nalco in 1988 as chief personnel manager, Angul sector. Before that, he served SAIL in various capacities at the Dungarpur steel plant and Bolani mines for more than two decades.
