Club Med closes sole local sales office

CLUB Med, one of the largest resort companies in the world, has closed down its only sales and reservations office in India, and instead appointed Thomas Cook as its general sales agent for the country.

The step is widely believed to be part of the downsizing and consolidation exercise in the Club Med worldwide which is reported to have turned in none-too-encouraging results last year. Club Med spent approximately Rs 6 crore on developing the India market and its operations since it opened its Delhi office in March 1995.

KLM-Northwest Airlines bags award:

Alliance partners KLM and Northwest Airlines were selected as co-winners of the Air Transport World Magazine `Airline of the year' award for 1997 recently. This is the second time in nearly 25 years that the editors of the world's leading aviation industry magazine have selected two winners for this prestigious award, viewed by the industry as the world's highest ranking recognition, according toa release here. It is the first time in the award's history that it has been given to an alliance.

In Network's Internet plans hit:

The Hindujas-owned IN Network's plans to offer Internet services over its cable network has hit a roadblock. This is because the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has disallowed cable operators from using their existing backbone to offer Internet services to their subscribers. IN Network had planned to provide Internet access to its subscribers over its cable TV network and had even drawn up plans to invest an estimated Rs 350 crore in this venture.

BPCL launches new lubricants:

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has launched its new lubricants in Calcutta. These new lubricants - Automol, Mak, Gilde and Spirol - are already available in colourful packs in other metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Formally launching the lubricant brands here on Wednesday evening at a colourful function BPCL's marketing director VK Raina said the new lubricantpacks having family resemblance would be available in the entire range of 5 litres to 0.25 litre size throughout the country before March 31 this year.

Bogmalo Beach Park unveils time-share programme:

The Bogmalo Beach Park Plaza in Goa has launched a timeshare programme -- Holiday Club -- which will offer 1,500 exclusive memberships. The move is expected to boost revenues and ensure occupancy even during the slack season. The Goa resort is owned by Trade Wings and managed by Sarovar Park Plaza. The inaugural offer is being made to a select group of Citibank Diners Club card holders but individuals can also directly apply for membership, Sarovar Park Plaza director (sales & marketing) Noshir A Marfatia told a reporters here on Thursday.

Procter & Gamble withdraws Vicks variant:

Procter & Gamble India (P&G) has withdrawn a Vicks variant, Vicks Vitamin C tablet, which went into test market in August 1996. This is because the product did not fit into the company's focus for Vicks as atherapeutic for cold and congestion. The company is also re-evaluating its strategies on Vicks Super Balm, another Vicks variant which was under test market and positioned at the adult category in the balms segment.
