Sena-BJP will secure 40 seats, says Joshi: Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi has expressed confidence that the Shiv Sena-BJP candidates would secure 35 to 40 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Joshi said that conditions were favourable for the BJP coming to power at the Centre with party leader Atal Behari Vajpayee becoming the prime minister. On the Babri Masjid issue, he said the Congress "had crossed all limits to appease the Muslims."

Cop to contest polls: Aftab Ahmed Khan, the tough cop of the recent past, plans to continue his toughness in politics by sticking to his principles as he prepares to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai north-west constituency on a Janata Dal ticket. Khan's main opponents are Madhukar Sarpotdar of the Shiv Sena, who is a sitting MP from the same constituency, and Samajwadi Party candidate Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.

India Foundation loan grants: India Foundation, Pune, offers loan grants in theform of interest-free loans to Indian students proposing to take up higher studies in India or abroad. Each selected student will be given an interest-free loan of not more than Rs 20,000.

BPL US West celebrates first anniversary in Pune: BPL US West Cellular Ltd, which started its mobile phone operations in Pune on January 27, 1997, celebrated its first anniversary by bringing Agatha Christie runaway hit "The Mousetrap" to Pune. The cast was from London and held four shows in Pune on February 6 at Gulati Hall and will hold two shows on February 7 at Balgandharva Auditorium.

IACC to hold meet: Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), Pune branch, has organised a meeting with Raj Dheer, commercial consul, US Commercial Council, American Centre. He will speak on "What US investors are looking for in India?" at Hotel Aurora Towers on February 7.

Mahratta Chamber organises seminar: Mahratta Chamber of Commerce and Industries has, jointly with the FCCI western region, organised aseminar on "Prospects and problems related to SSI". It will be inaugurated by Ashok Parathasarathi, secretary, SSI, government of India, on February 7.
