  Karunanidhi clarifies govt role in TMB issue
The opposition AIADMK members in the Tamil Nadu assembly on March 21, 1998, questioned the failure of the ruling DMK in restoring the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) back to the Nadar community. Karunanidhi has stated that the government really had no role in solving the issue, which was essentially a dispute between private industrialists.

The annual growth rate of the services sector in Maharashtra has been consistently accelerating. The trend annual growth rate during 1980-85 was 6.6%, it shot up to 8% during 1985-90 and further rose to 9.1% during 1990-95.

Cuddalore port tender to be floated in April
The Tamil Nadu government will make tenders available for the development of the Cuddalore port within the next month, according to R Gopalan, chairman of the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco). The Cuddalore project is part of the three minor ports the state has selected for development on a build, operate and own (BOO) basis.
Jaswant is Plan panel deputy-chairman
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh, who lost the race for the post of Union finance minister, has been appointed deputy-chairman of the Planning Commission on 21st March, 1998. Singh was the Union finance minister in the short-lived BJP government in 1996 and was the frontrunner for the same post in the new government.

International Monetary Fund draws up a relief plan for Indonesia
Top Indonesian and IMF officials met on 21st March, 1998, to discuss financial reforms as the international community prepared a relief plan to cushion the shock of the county's economic crisis on its 200 million people. The Indonesian side was headed at the talks by economics overlord Ginandjar Kartasasmita, while Hubert Neiss, head of the IMF's Asia-Pacific department, led the fund review team.

Bill, Atal put nuke issue on hold over phone
US president Bill Clinton, during his telephonic conversation with Indian prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, did not raise the issue of the BJP-led coalition's decision to keep India's nuclear option open. However, Clinton had indicated to Vajpayee that there would be a very open and mutual exchange of views between the two governments.
