  BHEL eastern-region turnover up 240% to Rs 152 crore
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd's (BHEL) turnover from the power sector in the eastern region has risen by 240% to 151.96 crore in 1997-98, against Rs 62.36 crore in 1996-97. The company's profit before tax (PBT) rose by 51.38% to Rs 26.93 crore as compared with Rs 17.79 crore in 1996-97.
  BPL group's restructuring programme hits a roadblock
The Nambiar-owned BPL group's restructuring plan has hit a roadblock. The proposal, which was initiated by the group on September 26, 1997, has not found favour with BPL Refrigeration, which has decided to retain its separate status. "BPL Refrigeration has decided to continue its ongoing efforts aimed at improving performance.

Tata Consultancy Services in pact with US firm for vending Java products
Tata Consultancy Services, the information technology arm of the Tatas, has entered into an alliance with the US-based software major Keylabs for 100 per cent Java purification and vending of other Java products.
Geometric Software sets up 100% arm in US
Geometric Software Services Company Ltd (GSSL), which was spun off as a separate company from Godrej & Boyce in 1994, has set up a 100 per cent subsidiary in the US named Geometric Software Services Inc (GSSI). GSSI is likely to become fully functional by June.

NTPC chief likely to get another extension
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) chairman and managing director (CMD) Rajendra Singh, who will attain superannuation on July 31, is in the reckoning for a second extension. This is despite the power ministry having forwarded names of over a dozen Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officers and technocrats for the post.

ICI auto-refinish products hope for a brush with the big time
ICI India has drawn up elaborate plans for its auto-refinish segment to coincide with the launch of new-generation cars such as Ford, Honda, Opel and their likes. The company may have to face tough competition in this paint category with most of its rivals planning various value additions.
