Proposal to launch infrastructure scheme to boost investments in tourism
The department of tourism is studying a proposal to float a new "Integrated infrastructure development" scheme aimed at boosting investment in tourism sector in the country by strengthening basic infrastructure on the lines floated earlier by the industry ministry.
Curbs on use of laptops by software tech parks lifted
The government has lifted the restrictions on the optimum use of laptop computers and video projection system (VPS) by units set up in software technology parks (STPs) and electronic hardware technology parks (EHTPs) as well as in the export processing zones (EPZ).
Cement industry records marginal fall in output
The growth rate of cement production was lower during 1997-98 than the previous year, but that of dispatches increased marginally, according to latest figures of the Cement Manufacturers' Association. For the financial year ended March 31, 1998, cement production at 75.44 million tonnes increased by 7.8% (8.45 per cent) over the last year's output of 69.98 million tonnes.
WTO to review Delhi's trade policy next week
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) will review India's trade policy next week in which it proposes to study the country's exports-imports policy and its commitment to international agreements signed over the years.
Central power commission to decide tariff issues soon
The centre has drawn up a common minimum action programme for power in the country so as to meet the energy needs more expeditiously. The centre has also decided to form central electricity regulatory commission to decide on matters related to power tariff.
"Gold imports have strengthened economy"
Increased imports of gold have helped strengthen India's economy, according to Rolf W Schneebeli, chief executive (Middle East and the sub-continent) of the World Gold Council. He maintained that gold imports have not affected India's foreign exchange reserves.
