  Key counter provisions likely to be inserted in amended Patents Act
The Union government has incorporated two crucial counter-provisions -- relating to public health & nutrition and national security -- in the amendments to the Patents Act of 1970, as required by the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). The new caveats are contained in a cabinet note prepared by the Union ministry of industry.
  Filmdom dons industry status; to come under concurrent list
The Union government has accorded industry status to the film industry. A government order in this regard would be passed soon after working out the modalities. The Union I&B ministry would place before parliament a proposal to bring films under the concurrent list, bringing it under the ambit of the Centre.

Publish list of defaulters: bank staff
Bank employees have demanded that a list of defaulters who have failed to repay loans aggregating a staggering Rs 45,000 crore be published so that the nexus between politicians, captains of industry and trade is exposed. They stated that the second report of the Narasimham Committeee on banking sector reforms was "conspicuously" silent on the issue.
Shiv Sena draws up plan to end Congress hold on cooperatives
The ruling Shiv Sena-BJP government in Maharashtra has chalked out a comprehensive plan to "purify" the Congress-ruled cooperative sector and encourage involvement of party activists in the movement. The idea is to "crush" the Congress monopoly in the cooperative sector.

EC to review anti-dumping duties on four firms
The European Union authorities have agreed to review anti-dumping duties imposed earlier on four Indian companies for the export of polyethylene and polypropylene sacks and bags. The four companies had sought a review of duties on the plea that they were new exporters.

Yashwant Sinha likely to open up insurance segment
The Union government is reportedly set to introduce a series of measures in the forthcoming budget session of parliament ushering in privatisation of the insurance sector. The measures will include enacting the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) Bill and amendments to the General Insurance Nationalisation Act 1972.
