  US sanctions: Are they complete trade embargoes?
The US economic sanctions against India, announced in the wake of a series of underground nuclear tests, falls short of a complete trade embargo. Purely commercial transactions will remain unaffected by Bill Clinton's action.
  Narasimham panel recommendations likely to find a place in union budget
Some of the recommendations of the Narasimham panel on banking sector reforms may find their way into the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government's budget. The panel's recommendations will come under the finance ministry and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) top brass' scrutiny today.

Industrial growth rate slumps to 4.2%
Industrial growth rate slipped to 4.2% during 1997-98 from 7.1% in the previous year. Official figures show that the robust 6.8% growth in electricity sector and a 4.9% growth in mining during the financial year were offset by a very low growth of 3.6% in manufacturing sector.
Centre clamps anti-dumping levy on Chinese, US electrodes
The Centre has imposed "final" anti-dumping duties on graphite electrodes originating in or exported by China and seven other countries. The duties depend on the size of the electrode, and are based on the "final" findings of the designated authority set up in the commerce ministry to probe dumping cases.

`DNV-classed ships face lowest detention ratio'
The ships classed by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) have the lowest detention ratio of all international classification societies, according to the latest US Coast Guard detention statistics. A communique released by DNV, the ships classed with the company had an average detention ratio of 0.77% as against a 0.96% ratio of the American Bureau of Shipping, the second in the list.

Sanctions won't hit CSIR plans, says Mashelkar
Scoffing at the scare-mongering and over-reactions to the three nuclear tests, CSIR director-general RA Mashelkar said that sanctions would not have any significant impact on CSIR's activity.
