Railway status paper suggests phased hike in passenger fares to ease freight
Concerned at the steadily declining market share in transport, the railways have demanded a level playing field, enhanced capital from the general exchequer, compensation for public service obligations and funding of uneconomic-but-socially desirable projects. The status paper, presented by railway minister Nitish Kumar in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, has also hinted at the need for a phased increase in passenger fares to ease freight rates.

Economic Survey to focus on slowdown in ind output, poor export perfomance
The economic survey 1997-98 will focus on slowdown in industrial production and poor export performance, while highlighting concerns over deteriorating fiscal deficit as a per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The survey, to be tabled in parliament today, will include statistics for the full fiscal, against the usual April-December figures taken into account while preparing the document on economic achievements.

India is a nuclear weapons state, reiterates PM
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday declared in the Lok Sabha that India is a nuclear-weapon state, but had no intention to engage in an arms race. He asserted that the recent tests had removed doubts about the country's nuclear capability while emphasising that the nuclear tests were conducted for self-defence and not for aggression.

Broadcasting Bill unlikely to be tabled in Budget session
The much-awaited Broadcasting Bill is unlikely to be presented in the budget session of the parliament which began yesterday. Though Union information and broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj has not ruled out the possibility of introducing the bill in the second part of the session, highly placed ministry sources said the chances of the bill coming through in the entire session were remote.
