Without a goal
This is the season for financial statements from the term-lending institutions. IFCI has reported a rise in sanctions by 52% in 1997-98 and IDBI by 42%. However, IFCI's disbursals rose by a mere 10% against IDBI's 33%. Reportedly, the pace of sanctions and disbursals by IDBI have accelerated in the first quarter of this fiscal.

The emergence of Bill Gates at the top of the Forbes' billionaires' list is confirmation of a new philosophy that is increasingly being accepted as a central economic principle. Bill Gates has shown through his meteoric rise and subsequent overwhelming domination that it is ownership of ideas, and not that of fixed assets, that will determine prosperity in future.
Rationalising motor insurance tariff
Recently, the issue of motor insurance "third party liability" rates has been vociferously debated in the press. Last year, the industry, citing a consistent run of underwriting losses, proposed to raise third party liability rates by 200% to 300%.
