New, improved hydropower policy on the anvil
Union power minister PR Kumaramangalam yesterday said the central government would implement a new hydropower policy next month for effective exploitation of hydel potential in the country. He lamented that the share of hydropower had come down to 25 per cent of the total power generation and that the government hoped to increase it up to 31 per cent by the Tenth Plan.
Plantation companies likely to gain from new agriculture policy
The new agriculture policy is likely to be a boon to plantation industry as it proposes to allot 40 million hectre of degraded lands for forestry out of the total of 80 million hectre of degraded lands in the country. Besides, the new policy has defined agriculture as `an human enterprise to produce biomass through optimum utilisation of land, water and other natural resources.'
Parliamentary committee raps Centre for huge oil-pool deficit
A parliamentary committee has criticised the government for allowing the oil-pool deficit of public-sector oil companies to accumulate over Rs 12,000 crore. In its fourth report tabled in parliament recently, the standing committee on petroleum and chemicals said it was regrettable that government allowed the deficit to accumulate, delaying the payment of huge amount to oil-sector PSUs.
