Chennai, July 19: The AB Vajpayee-led government on Sunday appeared to slip into a major crisis with Aiadmk chief Jayalalitha stepping up pressure on the Cauvery water issue. She has threatened the government of "disastrous consequences" if it failed to notify a scheme to implement interim award of the Cauvery Water Tribunal in the next two days.
Ahead of the July 21 hearing in the Supreme Court on Cauvery river water dispute case, Jayalalitha issued the warning in a statement here saying "I am bound to caution prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee that if his government further delays the notification on the scheme, the consequences will be disastrous."
The BJP, however, asserted there was no threat to the government and expressed confidence that a solution would emerge by July 21.

Tamil Nadu's case for notification of the draft scheme by the centre will come up for hearing in the SC on July 21. In New Delhi, parliamentary affairs minister Madan Lal Khurana expressed confidence that an amicable solution to the problem would be found and that "there is no threat to the government."
BJP spokesman M Venkaiah Naidu expressed confidence that the government would come forward with a solution on July 21.
He said political parties from Tamil Madu were as much justified in representing their case as MPs and political parties of Karnataka in safeguarding the interest of the state.
"I am confident that the centre is alive to the situation and will come forward with a solution by July 21."
CPM said the Cauvery issue should be mutually discussed between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments.
While, the government and political parties in Tamil Nadu are demanding immediate notification of the draft scheme, the government and political parties in Karnataka are opposed to this.
TheBJP is also likely to come under pressure from its party units in Karnataka following its significant success in the Lok Sabha elections.Relations between Aiadmk, whose support is crucial to the survival of the fragile coalition government, and BJP took a knock following rejections of its demand for dismissal of Karunanidhi government in Tamil Nadu.Of late, the party has been raising various other demands also with the Vajpayee government.
