Indian spices exports may fall short of target
India's spice exports in 1998/99 (April-March) are expected to fall short of the state-run Spices Board's target. A statement released by the board on the eve of the 105th Annual Conference of the United Planters' Association of Southern India (Upasi) said India exported 66,145 tonnes of spices in the April-July period worth Rs 5.23 billion ($123 million).
India far from self sufficiency in milk production
India will not be able to produce enough milk for its own population even three years after becoming the world's largest milk producer, according to the country's dairy industry estimates. India produced 74.3 million tonnes in 1997 and was in second position in the world behind USA. However, the milk requirement for the Indian population, on the other hand, was at 85.14 mt with a shortage of more than 10 mt.
Global celltel service-providers face stiff code
The government plans to stipulate stiff norms for global mobile personal communications service providers to cover security risks, including powers to take over the networks in emergencies and public interest. The service-providers will also have to give the government unlimited access to gateways, switching centres, transmission centres, routes for technical scrutiny and inspection.
