Rural poverty up
At the beginning of the nineties, India's agricultural growth was accelerating and spreading (particularly to the eastern states). However agricultural growth is declining in the high-productivity states of Punjab and Haryana; and it is deteriorating in states like West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
Callous attitude
The Maharashtra government's willingness to support Bal Thackeray's announcement to supply free power to farmers further mars Maharashtra's efficient and industry-friendly image, built painstakingly over decades. The state's over 24 lakh farmers account for an annual billing of about Rs 650 crore.
Holding companies are not NBFCs
In the last two years or so, a number of reforms were initiated to regulate the non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) in the country. This was necessary, given the large-scale swindling of public funds by unscrupulous companies.
