PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Jalgaon, Oct 13: It was not the otherwise popular cash discounts on silk sarees, diamond-studded jewellery, or hi-tech electronic gadgets---but a hefty discount on the humble onion that attracted the "Diwali shoppers" at Jalgaon city here on Monday.
Scores of enthusiastic consumers set aside their traditional Diwali shopping and thronged the Congress Bhavan here to purchase onions, neatly packed in plastic bags, which were being sold at a discount sale of Rs 4 a kg, as against current price of Rs 40 per kg by the Jalgoan unit of the Youth Congress.
However, many of those desirous of taking advantage of the unique sale had to be content with just one kg of onions, according to Youth Congress's state president and MLA, Anees Ahmed.
Many of the late-comers had to go home disappointed as stocks of onions disappeared within half an hour of the discount sale.
