Need to bridge GDP-SDP gulf stressed
Planning Commission member Montek Singh Ahluwalia said on Thursday that the gross domestic product (GDP) growth of six per cent was sustainable and to ensure this there was a need to address the disparity in the state domestic products (SDPs). "An important feature of planning is to examine the disparity between the rates of growth of SDPs", Ahluwalia said.
NHPC to execute 21 projects in 15 years
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has identified as many as 21 mega hydro power projects totalling 31,000 MW, to be executed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) over the next 15 years. Depending on the availability of funds, these mega hydro projects will be taken up by NHPC either on its own or as a joint venture with the private sector.
Clarifications on FDI in alcohol, cigarettes issued
The government on Thursday issued clarifications on the rules governing foreign direct investment (FDI) in the manufacture of alcohol and cigarettes. A press note issued by the government clarifies that proposals for manufacture of cigarettes with FDI upto 100% will be considered by the FIPB subject to the provisions relating to compulsory licensing under the Industries (development & regulation) Act, 1951.
