Back to gold now
For assessing prospects of industrial growth this year, attention is focused on the capital goods sector's performance, which recorded a handsome rise in production in the 1998 first quarter.
Bleak outlook
The initial run of second-quarter results declared by corporates offer no cause for optimism. Isolated sectors have done well, like software, FMCG, pharmaceuticals and motorcycles. But the bulk of the results have been pretty bad, especially when compared with the results in the first quarter.
Opt for direct public offer to divest shares
The debate about the modus operandi of disinvestment of shares of public- sector undertakings (PSUs) is an avoidable exercise. What should be done is to straightaway make an offer for sale of these shares directly to the investing public without anyone's intermediation.
