Mumbai, Dec 3: The textile ministry has decided to crack the whip on the swelling number of fradulent manufacturers, stockists and retailers by launching an awareness campaign about the rules and regulations governing the sale and manufacture of textile products.
In a release issued on Wednedsay, the ministry has stated that the consumers should be aware of certain statutuory markings to avoid cheating by unscrupulous manufacturers.
The objective of the marking regulations is that "the declared quality goods should be supplied to the customers and correct quality parameters should also be made known to the customers."
The ministry release specify the statutory markings and the most important among these are:
* Name and address of the manufacturer.
* Description of the cloth (namely, Dhoti saree etc).
* Length in meters and width in centimeters.
* Seconds quality or defective quality or damaged asthe case may be.
The same is applicable in the case of export rejects also.
* Raw materialspecification and fibre composition.
Ministry gives the example of unearthing of second quality sold in a retail shop as superior quality using wrong markings and it cautions the consumer to check the aforementioned details before the purchase. Also, the cloth manufactured by powerloomms are sometimes sold in the name of the reputed mills, the release says.
Manufacturers are required to provide the details under every alternate meter at the selvedge of the cloth.
The ministry has also set up an enforcement mechanism within itself which is empowered to take action if it is a genuine case of cheating. The customers are therefore required to report immediately to the director enforcement in textile commissioner's office, Mumbai, if they come across any such misleading information.
