Excise wings slaps Rs 7.5-crore claim on auto parts firms

New Delhi, Dec 6: The central excise department has directed 18 auto-component manufacturers, including Kalyani Brakes, Gabriel India, Munjal Showa and Sona Steering Systems, to pay Rs 7.50 crore as duty for undervaluation of products.

The department, which recently adjudicated the case, has scaled down the duty from Rs 11.50 crore to Rs 7.5 crore on the companies, which are all Maruti Udyog vendors, following re-calculation of the duty amount. The department has dropped the sales tax, octroi and freight charges from the original Rs 11.50 crore. Maruti Udyog, which along with the 18 vendors was also issued a show cause earlier this year for duty evasion, has been directed to pay only Rs 1 lakh as penalty. Other auto-component firms who had been issued the show cause include Asahi India Safety Glass, Lumax Industries, Purolator India, Bharat Seats, Jai Bharat Maruti, Caparo Maruti, Mark Auto Industries, Krishna Maruti, Bajaj Motors (P), Mark Exhaust Systems, Jay Yushin, Dynamic Industries, Sun Vacuum Formersand Engineers Combine.
