THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC 8: Uncertainty looms large over the formal commissioning of National Thermal Power Corporation's Kayamkulam Combined Cycle Power Project in Kerala. The indefinite postponement of the formal commissioning of the mega power project in the state is attributed to the lack of response from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO)."This does not in any way affect work at Kayamkulam project", according to NTPC sources. "We are awaiting the final word from Delhi and therefore we keep our fingers crossed in regard to the formal commissioning", the sources added. The trial production is in full swing and all related work on schedule. The first 115 mw unit of 350 mw project is now operated on 60 mw on naphtha and the load is being steadily increased.
"The delay in formal commissioning will, however, never put the clock back at Kayamkulam", commented an NTPC official.
Trial production had commenced over month back. The first 115 mw unit was test fired on November 1, `Keralappiravi Day', theanniversary of formation of the state. As per the original schedule, the plant was to have been formally commissioned on November 23 by prime minister A B Vajpayee. The NTPC authorities have been reportedly keen that the PM himself should inaugurate Kayamkulam project.
As the PM was not free on November 23, NTPC was directed by the PMO to have the commissioning any day between November 25 and 30. Kayamkulam witnessed hectic activity during the last week of November, preparing for the formal commissioning. All arrangement were made for the PM's arrival. But at the eleventh hour, came the communication from Delhi that the visit was being postponed. Since then, it has been a long wait, in Kayamkulam, for the Prime Minister.
