Centre to set up three thermal power projects: The centre has decided to set up three mega thermal power projects, including one 2,000 mw project based on imported coal near Pipavav port on the Saurashtra coast at a cost of Rs 8,000 crore. The other two projects are proposed to be set up at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu. The Pipavav plant, to be set up in private sector, would be exempted from customs duty and plant and machinery to be imported and commissioned in three years. Power Trading Corporation, acting as the central government's nodal agency, would buy power from the producer and sell it to the neighbouring participating states, sources said.

Microsoft to hold seminar: Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd is holding its annual professional developers conference - PDC '99 - in Bangalore on February 1 and 2. The seminar titled ``Building Web Applications with Windows Operating Systems'' will also discuss issues related to COM/COM+, Microsoft TransactionServer and Windows 2000, says a company release.

Bharti bags Rs 12 crore order: Bharti BT has bagged a 700-site V-SAT order worth Rs 12 crore from Hyderabad-based Sparsh Communication. The V-SAT network will be used to enable a country-wide system for monitoring of truck movement on major national highways and important state highways under the highway automation system (HAS). The HAS project will involve the deployment of info-kiosks at distances of 50 km along national highways, according to a press release.

Tainwala group: Justice SN Variava of the Bombay high court on Wednesday queried the Tainwala group on the manner in which it had disbursed interest-free funds to companies in which the directors were concerned. The court also raised questions about the wide discrepancies in the unaudited balance sheet of Tainwala Polycontainers (attached to the petition) and the final audited balance sheet. The court was reacting to an appeal preferred by Tainwala Polycontainers minority shareholder,DV Lakhani, seeking a stay against a recent high court judgment in a case involving the proposed merger of the company with Tainwala Chemicals & Plastics (India) Ltd. Lakhani had, among others, alleged that unaudited accounts attached to the petition are fudged and manipulated.
