New Delhi, Dec 18: The Union Government in an effort to promote exports of zari and zari based handicrafts will set up design development centre at Surat, in Gujarat.
This decision follows meeting convened by union textile minister Kanshiram Rana to review exports status of Zari products, offical release said today.
The government would include representatives of zari industry on All India-handicrafts Board, the release said.
Rana in a meeting with zari association representatives also assured the centre would take up matter of sales tax exemption to zari and zari handicrafts with the Gujarat government.
The zari products exports have grown in recent years with figures for 1997-98 and 1996-97 touching Rs 91.34 crore and Rs 79.78 crore respectively, the release said.
