CII-Ascon outlook positive for several industrial sectors

NEW DELHI, Dec 18: The CII-Ascon survey has projected a positive outlook for several industrial sectors including steel, sugar, tea, consumer electronics and durables, auto components, pulp and paper, processed food, fertiliser, drugs and pharmaceuticals and telecom equipment over the next six months.On the flip side, the survey reveals a negative outlook for machine tools, pig iron and textile machinery sectors.

According to the survey, steel, pig iron, commercial vehicles, light commercial vehicles, auto components, textile machinery, machine tools and three wheelers registered a negative growth in the April-October 1998 period compared to the same period last year.

Colour televisions, motor cycles, washing machines, personal computers, watches and clocks and computer hardware and software were the star performers with growth of over 20 per cent.

Other sectors which registered a negative growth in the period are lead and lead alloy, cold rolled steel, nylon tyre yarn, nylon filament yarn,multi-utility vehicles, electric motors and electrical cable and wires.

According to the Confederation of Indian Industry-Ascon survey cement, crude oil, petrol and LPG, aluminium, tea, processed food, cigarettes and tobacco, pulp and paper, automotive tyres, scooters and mopeds and telecom equipment registered a moderate growth (less than 10 per cent).

According to the survey fertilisers, paints, electronic components, polyester staple fibre, ceramics, colour picture tubes, refrigerators, drugs and pharmaceuticals and newsprint recorded a growth of 10-20 per cent during the period.

The survey states that steel, cement, pig iron, textile machinery, automobiles, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, polyester staple fibre, malted food and sugar registered a negative export growth during April-September 1998 over the corresponding period last year.

On the flip side, multi-utility vehicles, software, construction services, ball and roller bearings and polyester filament yarn recorded over 20 per centexport growth during the same period, the survey adds. According to the survey, aluminium, electronic components, diesel engines, consumer electronics, drugs and pharmaceuticals, tea, all three wheelers and refrigerators registered an export growth between 10 and 20 per cent during the six month period.
