Swadeshi Jagaran Manch criticises government's economic policy

Vikant Sahay
Patna, Jan 2: Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM), the economic wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has lambasted the economic policy of the BJP-led coalition at the centre, on the second day of its three-day national conference.

Founder member of SJM and senior RSS leader Dattopant Thengde in his speech said: "Vajpayee is our good friend and he should not surround himself with wrong advisors. Jawaharlal Nehru suffered paralysis and died after his association with VK Krishnamenon and the US President Wilson suffered the same due to his coterie."

The venue of conference is near the RSS office here. It is only 200 metres away from the house of union finance minister Yashwant Sinha, who also faced the wrath of the SJM.

Thengde said: "We are not supporters or opponents of any government but are certain the BJP has failed to follow its manifesto." Thengde said: "We hail the BJP move to carry out the Pokhran blasts and its stand on signing the CTBT, but after that the government has taken a complete U-turn onits manifesto.

" It is a sad development and I do not understand what political compulsions have forced him (Vajpayee) to do so. He is our good friend." Criticising the current stand of the government on introducing the patent and insurance bills in parliament, Thengde said: "We want that the centre withdraw these bills. It should not bow down to the pressures of the US, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF)." SJM also held that all national economic policies must undergo a national debate first. "Nuclear scientist APJ Abdul Kalam and computer scientist Vijay Bhaskar are our true friends. They have said India is a strong country. We are ready for the debate," said Thengde.

BJP's member of parliament from Mirzapur (UP) Virendra Singh, without naming Vajpayee said, "If Dhritrashtra is adamant, then we too are Arjuns ready to fire the arrow from our bows. I fail to understand why politicians change their stands soon after entering the North or South Block in Delhi." TheManch was of the opinion that all development work and economic policies should begin from the grassroots as suggested by Mahatma Gandhi.

"The government has taken brave steps like the Pokhran blast but has laid its arms and weapons in the economic world war. All imports related to the agriculture sector must be stopped for the development of internal resources and infrastructure," the SJM agenda said.

The agenda also said: "All dependence on our part will force us to become beggars. We will ultimately turn out to be colony of the economic powers of the world."

Addressing the SJM gathering, general secretary of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Harendra Kumar said: "Liberalisation of our economy began since 1991. None of the political parties carrying out such measures have returned to power at the Centre. "
