Indo Argyle Diamond Council plans to widen base

Mumbai: Indo Argyle Diamond Concil (IADC) is planning to broaden its membership in 1999 by admitting some more Indian diamond firms in its fold. Currently, about 17 Indian diamnd processing firms are its members . This may rise to over 20-30 in the current year.

Argyle is the largest producer of rough diamonds in the world while India is the largest processor of these stones. Accordingly both India and ARgyle both have a common interest in promoting the marketing of diamond jewellery.In order to assist its customers to develop the market for jewellery studded with its stones Argyle Diamond has established the IADC in 1994.

Argyle has been providing a variety of trade support services to IADC members to assist them in building up jewellery sales of small diamonds in the USA. Argyle tries wtih the IADC members to develop a better understanding of the needs of the USA. Since its commencement 1n 1994, sales of jewellery from India to the USA by IADC members have growth from a few million to about $100 millionin 1998.

Since July 1996, Agyle has started independent marketing of the entire production of its rough diamonds through its Antwerp-based European sales office. Argyle feels that the success of its independent marketing has been underwritten by its extensive market research and development as well as subsequent promotion activities. Since its inception here, IADC has launched quite a few market development initiatives to support its product and strengthen relation ships with India. These include programmes pertaining tot sales promotion international coloured diamonds awards, promotion of champane diamonds, technical assistance to Indian cusotmers base and publicaiton of technical bulletiens in the regional languages.

When the commencement of IADC was announced, Argyle Diamonds general manager (rough sales division) Mike A Mitchell, had maintained that IADC will develop its member companies as first choice suppliers of small diamonds used either in lose condition or as jewellery form.

In recent years,a numeb rof leading Indian diamond firms have diversified in the field of jewellery where the scope for gowth is much bettern than in selling loose stones.

The main function of IADC is to help it members in achieving an edge in the very competitve US markets.
