ONGC rig's cantilever portion retracted to allow access to well

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

Mumbai, Mar 17: The cantilever portion of rig `Sagar Ratna' has been retracted as a prerequisite to the moving of the rig to allow close access to the burning gas well, about 160 kms off north-west Mumbai, in the western offshore.

Checking of mechanical and electrical equipment of the rig was still on, prior to moving the rig to a reasonable distance to be used as a support for operations to control the leakage of gas from well D's casing between the upper and lower decks, ONGC spokesman E Mohan Reddy said in a statement here. After relocation of the rig, two experts from US-based Cudd Pressure Control Inc and ONGC team will have a closer look at the fire site and work out control operations to put out the fire and check the extremely high pressure generated at the source of the gas under the sea-bed.Gas leaking from well D, part of platform B-121 comprising five wells, has been burning.
