New Delhi, May 17: Revenue secretary Javed Choudhury has said that 96 per cent of the income tax returns filed in the country would be subject to arithmetical verification only. The returns filed would be accepted across the board by tax officials without cross-checking of entries. However, the remaining four per cent of the assessees would be subject to intense scrutiny, he added. This was aimed at checking evasion, increasing compliance and reducing subjectivity.
Speaking to the media after the conclusion of the 15th conference of chief commissioners and director generals of income tax here on Monday, Choudhury said that the step was in the direction of having an efficient and effective system in the background of rising number of tax payers and pressure to downsize the department.
Choudhury said that four per cent of the tax payers was the optimum number that the department could effectively scrutinise. In the next 10 days the tax board would issue step by step guidelines on the basis of which the fourper cent of the assessees would be selected for scrutinisation. Percentages for detailed scrutiny would be fixed for each sector of the economy depending on the scope of evasion. Sectors more prone to evasion would have a greater fixed percentage than other sectors.
