Pope John Paul II hurt in fall
Agencies
Warsaw, June 12: Pope John Paul II fell and suffered a cut to his head on Saturday morning, before leaving Warsaw for an open-air mass. The Pope, who has spent the last week on a visit to his native Poland, required three stitches on his right temple. He later travelled by helicopter to the mass in the south-eastern city of Sandomierz. He arrived with a plaster visible on his head. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls described the injury as a "slight contusion" which would have "no neurological repercussions" or other effects on the Pope's health. He said the Pope had slipped and struck his head on the ground while leaving the residence of the Nuncio - the papal ambassador - in Warsaw around 0800 local time (0600 GMT). Navarro-Valls added there would be no changes to the schedule for the Pope's 13-day Polish visit. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
