Innovation will be the key to survival

Anamika Rath
Mumbai, June 13: Be a dolphin--learn, innovate and grow--or you will be as extinct as the dinosaurs. That was the recurring message of the six short films screened at the 7th International Management Film Festival in Mumbai on Friday. Organised by the Centre for Change Management and HRD Multimedia, the theme of the festival revolved around: strategic ideas and innovation for the new millennium.

The internationally acclaimed documentaries screened on the occasion created a platform to share good management practices relating to innovation, and highlighted the role innovation will play for business-growth and development in the next millennium.

The documentaries used animation and real-life footage for effective messages on Tactics of Innovation, Becoming the Best, The Red Movie (elements of decision making), and Ideas into Action. The Tactics of Innovation film for example, showed how by using the right techniques you could ensure that your ideas are accepted at work. These are: learn to present the ideafrom the user's point of view; present ideas in seemingly simple ways; divide the big idea into small segments; use a language that is understandable to users; make your idea a compatible fit as the more your idea matches with the existing structure, the easier it will be accepted; the idea should be credible enough outlining reliable performance; and there should be an easy in/easy out to your ideas.

Similarly, the tips for generating ideas in a workplace were: have an open and friendly environment in the workplace; have regular meetings and encourage employees to talk so that they get a sense of ownership; and finally, let people know that it is okay to have a problem because there is help available to them always. Clearly, if the organisation gives scope in its culture for ideas and innovation to nourish, it will develop an organisation of achievers--and not just performers.
