CEOs mix networking, business with pleasure

Goa, Aug 27: For some of the leading Indian CEOs, its brainstorming of a different kind in sylvan surroundings. There are no suits and neckties. No business formalities. And for a change, they have their spouses besides them to talk business.

Welcome to Ficci's corporate retreat at Taj Group's Fort Aguada Beach Resort in Goa. The four-day retreat which began on Friday will have 35 Indian CEOs and their spouses go through interactive sessions with some of the leading management consultants, bureaucrats and newspaper editors.

The big names which have taken time off to introspect on their businesses and redefine strategies include GP Goenka of Duncans industries, Ashwin Dani of Asian Paints, Sunil Alagh of Britannia Industries, Vinay Rai of Group Usha, N Srinivasan of India Cements, OP Lohia of Indo Rama Synthetics, KK Modi of Apollo Tyres, YK Modi of Atlas Cycle, Onkar S Kanwar of Apollo Tyres, YK Modi of Rossell Industries and Sudhir Jalan of Bells Controls.

Some of the top bureaucrats such as secretaryin the prime minister's office NK Singh, special secretary (banking) Devi Sayal, industrial development and public enterprise secretary S Narayan and defence secretary T R Prasad are also slated to reach here on Saturday. Unit Trust of India chairman PS Subramanyam is also here to give the perspective of the financial institutions.

The industrialists not only want to hone up their management skills and, in words of Ficci prsident Sudhir Jalan, think differently and critically but do some networking. Vinay Rai, the director in charge of the retreat, wants to make it an annual affair at Goa. A sort of mini-Davios where Indian industrialists can think while being away from their daily chores.
