`Poverty line up by 4 percentage points'
The number of people living below the poverty line went up by 4 % points in the years between 1993 and 1998. According to Planning Commission estimates which are based on the NSS data, about 36% of the people were below the poverty line in 1993, whereas in 1998 it went up to 40%.

Economic bills to get top priority -- Vajpayee
Prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee indicated to a delegation of businessmen from the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India on Saturday that clearances of all pending economic bills would be accorded top priority.

Engineers body asks GEB to reduce power tariff gap
Even as the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has decided to import cheaper coal to offset huge losses, the IEEE Power Engineers Society (Indian council) has asked GEB to reduce the wide gap in electricity tariffs between farm sector on the one hand and industrial and commercial consumers on the other.
