Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born on June 19, 1947, to Anis Ahmed Rushdie and Negin Rushdie Nee Butt, their first long-hoped-for child. The Rushdies were a wealthy Muslim family and their money came from a leather-and-cloth business started by Anis Rushdie's father.
