London, Aug 29: Singapore Airlines affiliate Virgin Atlantic has signed an order for two new 747-400 airliners from Boeing Co to meet expansion plans, the British airline said on Tuesday. The aircraft would be fitted with General Electric Co CF6-80 engines and be financed through a leasing deal with GE unit GE Capital Aviation Services, Virgin said in a statement. The deal is one of the few recent orders for passenger versions of the 747, the world's largest airliner.Over the past few years Boeing has increasingly sold the plane as a freighter. "This new acquisition increases the Virgin Atlantic 747 fleet to 18, including eight 747-400s," the airline said, adding that the new planes would be delivered late next year. The company gave no value for the deal but Boeing's catalogue price for the 747-400 -- assumed to attract significant discounts -- is about $185 million.
