Back to basics: Barter comes back to business, courtesy barterbiz.com

Hyderabad Bartering, the old-fashioned means of exchange using anything other than money has now taken a revolutionary route as an alternative currency system. So says, Mr Ramesh Batavia, the brainchild of barterbiz.com, the barter division of the Bangalore-based Revelations Business Solutions (P) Ltd who unveiled the AP operations in Hyderabad.Barterbiz is the most-preferred B2B company which revived the barter system in 1995. With a client base of 500 and a turnover of Rs 9 crore it is planning to double the turnover this year as well adding another 100 clients before March 2001, he said.

A relatively inexpensive method of finance, barter system has attracted 3,00,000 business. Corporate barter is the most happening thing now, he says. PepsiCo, General Atlantic, IBM, Xerox, Pizza Hut, etc are some of the few companies who use barter system to increase sales and visibility. He says 65 per cent of the Fortune 500 companies and many MNCs engage in barter. In India, Titan Watches, The Indian Express Group, Spectrum Group, Suman Motels, Videocan International and many more have gone for the barter system.

Over $7.5 billion is being transacted through barter system each year by the commercial sector worldover, he says. This figure is growing at an estimated level of 8 per cent annually. Online barter is already a $16 billion business in the US. Also on the line is e-bartering which is fast-emerging solution for doing business transactions.

The purpose of corporate barter was to fill the unsold media time and space, he says. Barter is legal, valid and can establish links between many companies. The barter fee collected from transactions is approximately 10 per cent and the product which is bought and sold is on MRP rate, he said. Plans are afoot to launch a portal for online corporate barters and is also planning to go global. He says that if WTO norms are eased, then the barter system in India, like in the US, is likely to grow by leaps and bounds in the next few years.
