Restrictions likely on import of used cars
The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Automobiles Manohar Joshi on Thursday announced that the Centre would impose certain tariff and non-tariff restrictions on the import of used vehicles, in a serious bid to avoid India turning into a dumping ground for such vehicles. Mr Joshi said this at the inauguration of the CII Auto Show 2000 which kicked off in Mumbai on Thursday. This issue would be incorporated prominently in the proposed auto policy, which is likely to be released by the end of December or early next year, he said.

CII Auto Show 2000 -Postal staff seek PM's intervention
As postal services across the country remained disrupted for the third day on Thursday, the employees unions, spearheading the strike, appealed for Prime Minister's intervention, while the Communication Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said the government may consider seeking Army's help to run the services if the situation so warranted.

SC orders closure of polluting units
The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered closure of all polluting industrial units functioning in the residential and non-conforming areas of the national capital within four weeks. A three-judge bench headed by Justice BN Kirpal said this order will be implemented under the supervision of a nodal agency created in the urban development ministry with the cooperation of Delhi Government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Development Authority.

MERC raps state govt
The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on Thursday rapped the state government for putting on hold its directive asking BSES Ltd to pay Rs 181.5 crore standby charges to Tata Electricity Companies adjourning the matter till December 18.

HC gives ED more time for RIL probe
The Delhi High Court on Thursday gave two months time to Enforcement Directorate to complete its investigations into the alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Regulation Act by Reliance and its alleged links with Romesh Sharma.

Sebi decision on disclosures
The Securities and Exchange Board of India has decided that all material event disclosures, including dividend, bonus and rights issue announcements should be made within 15 minutes of the conclusion of the board meeting even during the trading hours.

S'pore firms seen hit by MSCI changes
Some of Singapore's best-known companies, including Singapore Airlines and Chartered Semiconductor, could be less attractive to investors after free-float adjustments by benchmark indices MSCI this Sunday. But the move by Morgan Stanley Capital International to weigh stocks in indices according to the number of shares freely available for trading could help younger public companies like train operator SMRT Corp, analysts said.
