For many the new year means celebration, dance, music and gift-giving. But among the most enduring gifts is the 203-metre-long `World Millennium Greeting Card', handwritten by Ms Goparaju Deepthi Sharma. This 19-year-old science student of Dr V S Krishna Government Degree College, Vishakapatnam, hand wrote this card, which depicts the history of the world from 6000 BC to the present day. All the eminent personalities - from historians to politicians to writers and sports personalities - feature in the card.
Ms Sharma, who has made it to the Limca Book of Records with this card, has won several other awards to her credit like the Creative Award, Indira Gandhi Sadbhavana Award, Ugadi Puraskar and was even felicitated by Andhra Pradesh Government for this feat. She believes that our celebrations of the millennium are incomplete without remembering those eminent personalities.
``Whatever we are enjoying, it's all because of them,'' she points out. Her message is to spread peace through this card.
Amongst the various personalities she has listed, Ms Sharma was fascinated the most by Mother Teresa. "She has done a lot of service to the poor. Her contribution to the world is endless." Ms Sharma took eight days to complete the work. She started on the night of December 23, 1999, and by the New Year's eve, the work was successfully accomplished.
Initially, her parents were not amused by her idea. But seeing her relentless dedication, they encouraged her to proceed. Now, her sole wish is to display it in all the schools, colleges in India and if possible abroad as well."By doing this I want that everyone should become an ambassador of peace.
It should be embodied in us right from childhood itself," she adds. This card was also displayed at the Indian contingent's office at the Olympic Games Village in Sydney.
Making the card was not a cakewalk for her she did face several difficulties while making it, especially getting information from libraries to confirm the facts. But now the only problem she faces is lack of finance. "I need sponsors to display the card at various places."
(Ms Sharma's card will be displayed at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Arts, New Delhi, in February.)
