`I'm very spoilt doing nothing'

Film-actress Mumtaz was very popular co-star of Mr Rajesh Khanna, having reached the peak of her acting career after a long struggle. Her first movie was with Mr Dara Singh, then Mr Mehmood and with the greatest heart throb Mr Khanna. At the height of her hard earned success, Ms Mumtaz had a fairy-tale marriage with upcoming industrialist Mayur Madhwani and famed away from the silver screen. Today, Ms Mumtaz is having to call upon her reservoir of guts and grit yet again. For the lady has been diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes. She spoke to Punam Mohandas in her opulently done-up Berkeley Square flat in London. How did you discover that you had cancer?

I'm really lucky to be diagnosed in the first stage itself. In this stage, the cancer is slow growing and so is quite safe. At first, the doctors refused to listen to me when I said I felt a lump. I insisted they operate, and it's only when they removed the lump and sent it for biopsy that they found it be cancerous. Today, they also tell me I'm very lucky! But when I told them in the beginning, they never took me seriously.

What is a normal day like, for you?
I exercise till noon. Then, I meet up with friends, may be go out for lunch or something. My children come home after five in the evening, then I'm with them. Children are always children for their parents. I'm always worried that that they could get into the wrong company, drugs, etc. I'm not a partybird; I sleep at ten. I also travel a lot. After India, I don't mind London. The only thing I don't like is the climate. It's very depressing.

How do you explain doing a movie like Aandhiyaan years after leaving the industry?
Actually, at that time, my husband and I had an argument, and he said things like nobody will take you, nobody will give you the price you ask for. So, this was basically to show him that I can always get work.

Therefore, did you feel very let down by the outcome?
To tell you the truth, I felt sorry for our Indian audience's mentality. I was just playing my age in that film. And I think it was one of the best movies Mr David Dhawan has made. But for me personally, they wanted me to do another film. People are offering me serials.

So can your fans expect to see you again on screen?
If I hadn't fallen ill, maybe I would have. I really have no reason to work now. I'm very spoilt doing nothing. I don't know if I'll be able to cope.

Like I said, I had a point to prove to my husband, which I did. I was 26 when we got married, he was 24. And he knows now that if I want to earn money, I can.

In retrospect, do you feel a great deal of bitterness?
The only thing I'm bitter about is in between when I was not getting on with my husband, and many of my so-called `friends' moved over to his side, thinking that he would leave me. Because he has more money, so he has more power. When you're secure, you think from the relationship's view, not the money view, and I felt betrayed by the relationship. It's not fair, but that's the way the world is. Today, I'm very proud of my husband. I have no regrets. He tries to be with me whenever possible like when I have to go for my chemotherapy. I was hurt yes, but that can happen in the smallest or the biggest family.
