Make Bofors papers public: Cong MPs
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 6: Taking strong objection to former Army Chief General K
Sundarji's utterances on Rajiv Gandhi and the Bofors episode and ``selective
quotations from the Bofors documents'', several Congress MPs today demanded
that the entire Bofors papers be made public and investigations pursued to
its logical conclusion.
``The V P Singh Government had tabled the June 1987 note of Rajiv Gandhi
which shows that Chief of the Army staff had been asked to evaluate the
security implications of the cancellation of the deal. The then Chief of
Army staff did not answer any of the questions put to him and chose to
repeatedly give only political advice,'' the Congress MPs said in a joint
statement. ``It is well known that the same Chief of Army staff had also
nearly involved us in conflicts with two of our neighbours at the same time.
It was only intervention at the highest political level which controlled the
situation,'' the MPs pointed out, describing General Sundarji's recent
statements as ``highly irresponsible''.
``Selective quotations from the Bofors documents, as made in the past by V P
Singh, will only serve to muddy the waters rather than bring out the truth.
We demand that the entire Bofors documentation be made public and that the
Bofors investigation be pursued to its logical conclusion.''
