CBI may register cases in pump allotment scam
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 22: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today told the Delhi High Court that it has almost completed the probe into allotment of petrol pumps and LPG dealership from former petroleum minister Satish Sharma's discretionary quota and is contemplating registration of a regular case against the accused. A division bench, comprising Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice D K Jain, said some more cases might have to be referred to the investigating agency for a thorough probe. The bench said the CBI has done a thorough professional job by undertaking proper field work and finding allottees' proximity to the minister, his influence and wealthiness. The centre for public interest litigation through counsel, Prashant Bhusan, had alleged that most of the allotments made by the petroleum ministers were done arbitrarily. On Bhusan's allegation that neither the petroleum ministry nor the oil selection boards complied with the even distribution of discretionary quota in all cities, the bench directed the ministry and the board to submit to the court within five days all discretionary quota allotments in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore from 1993 onwards.
