Gujarat rain toll mounts to 172

AHMEDABAD, June 29: Floods in several parts of Gujarat claimed four more lives in the past 24 hours, raising the toll in the State to 172 today.

One person was swept away in the swirling waters in Idar taluka of Sabarkantha district, while a 14-year-old boy was killed in a wall collapse.

A 22-year-old youth was also swept away by an overflowing river in Kheda district. A police head constable was killed when a wall collapsed in Astodia area of the walled city of Ahmedabad.

According to official sources, 1.60 lakh food packets were dropped by helicopters with the help of the Army in the affected areas.
