Sharma too gets down to business
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director R C Sharma has asked Joint Director U N Biswas to reach the Capital today with the second charge-sheet in the fodder scam, implicating Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav. The CBI has already filed one charge-sheet in the sessions court in Patna against Laloo (FIR no. 20).

Laloo supporters boycott Dal polls
The Polling for the Janata Dal (JD) presidential election in the states concluded peacefully with at least 762 National Council members out of a total of 1,O37 exercising their franchise yesterday. Only 46 of the 152 National Council members from Bihar cast their votes in the poll.

Defying ban, Bofors sells spares to India
The Swedish armaments company, Bofors has supplied spare parts for anti-tank weapons to India, defying a 1990 ban on the company's activities in the country. Bofors has confirmed that the spare parts were delivered but claims remarkably that it was not aware of the final destination.

Hingis, Sampras run out easy winners
The two 16-year-olds, who would probably lead the game into the 21st century, battled it out for a place in the final of "The Championships" at Wimbledon yesterday. The top-seed Martina Hingis maintained her straight-set winning spree to win over her opponent Anna Kournikova, by 6-3, 6-2 in two minutes more than an hour.In the final Hingis will meet Czech Jana Novotna.

Pakistan confirms Hatf missile test
Pakistan yesterday confirmed that it test-fired the medium range Hatf missile and said it was aimed at "peaceful uses of rocket motor technology". The confirmation comes after several Pakistani newspapers on Wednesday reported the test-firing of Hatf. However, the range of missile was not confirmed.

VDIS-97 challenged in court; public interest suit filed in Mumbai HC
Union finance minister P Chidambaram's voluntary disclosure of income scheme (VDIS-97) is up against its first court challenge. Barely two days after the scheme was launched on July 1, the All India Tax Practitioners Association has moved the Mumbai high court challenging the scheme for being discriminatory in its treatment of honest taxpayers. The case will come up for hearing on Monday, July 7.

Basic travel quota raised to $3,000
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today liberalised rules for the release of foreign exchange by authorised dealers for purposes like advance remittances for imports without a bank guarantee, basic travel quota, travel abroad for employment and gifts.

Bloomberg launches data service operation
The US-based Bloomberg Financial Markets launched its data service operations in the country yesterday. Bloomberg Data Services will offer direct access to users here. A global player in information services, Bloomberg has been operating in India for over two years.

DoT clears Hughes Network plan for trials
Hughes Network Systems, the leader in digital wireless in local loop technology enjoying over 30 per cent of the global market share, has got the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) approval for field trial of its IS-136 time divisible multiple access (TDMA) technology.

Chemplast Sanmar mulls pact with Japanese firm
The Chennai-based Chemplast Sanmar, flagship of the Sanmar group, plans a strategic alliance with Japanese major Nissho Iwai for the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The tie-up is expected to be finalised shortly.
