LOS ANGELES, July 24: Mark Philippoussis lost the battle of serves, but overcame fellow Australian Sandon Stolle 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the Infiniti Open men's tennis tournament.Stolle won the first two games of the second set before Philippoussis fought back to 3-3. Philippoussis took the last two games of the set as Stolle double-faulted three times.

In other second-round matches, second-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden eliminated Vincent Spadea 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Frenchman Guillaume Raoux upset fifth-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen outlasted Armenian Sargis Sargsian 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Muster, Kafelnikov win

KITZBUEHEL, AUSTRIA: French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten crashed out of the $535,000 Generali Open today while Thomas Muster and Yevgeny Kafelnikov breezed into the third round.

Top seed and world number five Muster delighted the home crowd with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Spain's Carlos Costa Second seeded Russian Kafelnikov eliminated Brazil's Fernando Meligeni 6-1, 6-3 but Kuerten bowed out to unfancied Argentine Hernan Gumy, also 6-1, 6-3.The clay court tournament's third seed, Spaniard Alex Corretja, struggled but got past Argentina's Luca Arnold 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

Defending champion Alberto Berasategui of Spain, the fifth seed, suffered a surprise upset when he was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by young Austrian Stefan Koubek, ranked 171st in the world.

Hingis on target

STANFORD: Martina Hingis had six aces and didn't lose her serve in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Magdalena Maleeva in the 450,000 dollar Bank of The West womans Tournamentat Stanford.
